Build a brilliant future with Hiscox
The Role
This role sits within the UK Retail technology team, and it is aligned to the Core platform application IDIT/Merlin, with a future transition to a new document management system planned. In this role, you will be working closely with product owners, change, and engineering teams as part of a delivery squad or project.
The Senior Application Consultant owns the configuration and delivery of business document changes within the Merlin (Sapiens IDIT) insurance platform, enabling the UK business to take direct control of document-related configuration changes currently managed by external Sapiens Implementation Engineers. The role ensures that document and template changes are delivered efficiently, under robust governance and quality controls.
Initially focusing on document changes in Merlin (the current policy administration platform), the Senior Application Consultant will also drive the planning and transition towards a new document management solution that will support all products and channels in future. As a lead position, with line management of an initial team of 2 Associate application consultants, this role combines hands-on delivery of configuration changes with leadership in setting and enforcing development standards, coaching team members, and ensuring consistent best practices. Ultimately, the Senior Application Consultant plays a critical part in embedding an internal capability for documents – reducing reliance on vendor teams, maintaining strong auditability, and continuously improving how document changes are delivered.
Key Responsibilities
- Document Configuration Change Delivery: Take end-to-end ownership of business document configuration changes in Merlin (IDIT), from approved change scope through to build and deployment. Work closely with business stakeholders and change team members to confirm change scope, acceptance criteria, and implementation approach. Implement approved document template or configuration changes in development environments, adhering strictly to established configuration standards and controls to maintain quality and consistency.
- Testing & Assurance: Plan and execute thorough unit testing and peer reviews for each document change across relevant scenarios. Produce clear evidence and documentation to support robust change sign-off and regulatory audit requirements. Work closely with quality engineering teams to triage and fix defects and ensure that all changes meet high quality standards without introducing unintended impacts on Merlin or downstream processes
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as a trusted partner to both business and technical stakeholders. Collaborate closely with product owners, delivery leads, business Analysts and engineering teams to ensure solutions meet business objectives and are technically sound. Engage with Sapiens team leads as necessary to align on best practices and transitions, and to influence platform enhancements where needed. Clearly communicate technical concepts and solution designs in an accessible way to non-technical stakeholders to drive alignment.
- People Leadership & Development: Line manages a small team (initially ~2 tbc) providing guidance, mentoring, and performance management. Lead by example in following best practices and quality standards, fostering a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and collaboration within the team. Oversee teamwork allocation, ensure consistent adherence to configuration and development standards across the team’s outputs, and champion personal development and skills growth of team members.
- Transition & Continuous Improvement: Plan and lead the migration of document configurations from Merlin to the future document management system, ensuring knowledge transfer, minimal disruption and compatibility between the platforms. Oversee readiness for the new solution (including training your team on new tools, processes, and any data migration tasks). Regularly review and improve configuration processes, standards, and controls, identifying opportunities to streamline delivery while maintaining quality and compliance.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in configuration or change roles on complex software platforms – preferably policy/insurance systems or similar, with exposure to document/template generation processes.
- Solid understanding of change governance, testing practices (e.g. unit testing) and evidence-based change control in a regulated environment (insurance or financial services)
- Strong understanding of configuration change processes, including controlled implementation, defect resolution, and release readiness within established delivery standards.
- High attention to detail with strong documentation and version control discipline – capable of maintaining rigorous records of changes, test evidence, and approvals
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills – comfortable working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and explaining complex concepts clearly.
- Leadership ability – prior experience in leading or mentoring team members (formally or informally), with the skills to manage performance and develop capability in others.
- Hands-on experience with Sapiens IDIT (Merlin) or other policy administration/document management platforms, including an understanding of their document configuration or template mechanisms.
- Familiarity with document composition tools or configuration of output documents in systems (e.g. document template design, document workflow) and knowledge of modern document management solutions.
- Experience working with third-party solution providers or core system vendors, and ability to coordinate with vendor engineers or consultants for knowledge transfer and best practices.
- Project or change management exposure – comfortable with agile delivery processes, tools (e.g. JIRA), and managing changes in a structured, auditable way.
The Senior Application Consultant is expected to operate with a high level of ownership and accountability. You are collaborative and proactive in seeking guidance or alignment from technical experts, while confidently guiding your team and stakeholders through the change process. A continuous improvement mindset is vital – you’ll encourage learning, knowledge sharing, and refinement of processes to build a resilient document change capability for the business.
