Senior Backend Developer
Remote Crew
Remoto
Summary
At Remote Crew, we're partnering with a global industrial IoT company that monitors over 1.25 million connected assets across 80+ countries, looking for a Senior Backend Engineer. You'll join a small, senior R&D team and own the backend services and data pipelines that turn real-time sensor telemetry into forecasts and alerts customers actually trust. This is a newly created role on a team that recently expanded after a major growth investment, and you'll shape the roadmap rather than work through a ticket queue.
- Salary: $54k - $84k / year (Contract of employment, direct with client)
- Location: Hybrid (Porto)
What You'll Do
- Own backend services and APIs end to end, from defining requirements to running them in production
- Build and operate data pipelines that ingest real-time telemetry from industrial IoT sensors worldwide
- Design forecasting and anomaly detection on time series data with gaps, drift, and irregular sampling
- Apply statistical judgment to tell real signal from noise and communicate confidence levels
- Set up instrumentation, alerting, and the operational habits that keep systems healthy
- Use agentic coding tools like Claude Code, Copilot, and Cursor as part of your daily work
- Hold AI generated code to the same quality bar as any other code you ship
- Structure repos, tests, and documentation so both people and AI agents can work effectively
- Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Product teams to translate business goals into working software
- Shape your own roadmap and take projects from a greenfield state through to production
- Mentor other engineers through code review and design discussions
- Raise the team's engineering practices across testing, CI/CD, and AI assisted development
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of hands-on production software engineering experience, with strong and current Python skills used daily (git, code review, linters, unit tests, CI/CD)
- Solid SQL experience and work with data at scale using tools like Pandas, PySpark, and platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or Postgres
- Proven experience operating software in production, including deployment, monitoring, and alerting
- Working fluency with statistics: distributions, uncertainty, correlation versus causation
- Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) as part of daily delivery
- You still code daily. This isn't a fit for someone who has moved fully into management and no longer ships code
Nice to Have
- Depth in Azure Databricks, including streaming pipelines
- Experience with time series work in production, such as forecasting or anomaly detection
- Experience with message queuing systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ
- Experience building agentic workflows or working with frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, or AutoGen
- Domain experience in industrial, energy, or IoT settings
Why Work With Us
- You'll own real projects from day one, not inherit a backlog. You define the problem and drive the solution
- Work with real connected hardware. Your code processes live telemetry from sensors on tanks across the globe
- Join a small, flat, highly senior team where your technical calls carry real weight
- Use agentic AI tools daily as a core part of how the team builds, not as an afterthought
- Join a company in active growth mode after a recent private equity investment, with visible impact on a small team
If you want real ownership over the software behind industrial IoT at global scale, we'd love to hear from you.
